THE CONCEPT OF DETOXIFICATION

Throughout history, man has somehow been able to create environments and compounds in the name of progress that can create a buildup of toxic elements in the body. The beginning was probably when he lived in caves and burned fires for warmth and to keep wild animals at bay. Inhaling the concentrated smoke would have definitely led to emphysema, asthma, and other respiratory ailments.

This type of smoky environment still exists today although today you can’t easily get away from smoky polluted city air unless you create more pollution by driving to the country. Additionally, the smog found in most large cities is far more complex in its toxic load than mere burning wood. Unfortunately, air pollution in just the beginning of the toxic load we as a society now get exposed to on a daily basis. Now, we must be concerned with what has been sprayed on our food to keep it from being eaten by insects, bacteria, or fungi before we can harvest it. We must be concerned with the chemical additives put into our packaged and prepared foods to keep them from spoiling or somehow make them more palatable to our now distorted sense of what tastes good. We must be concerned with what is added to our water to make it safe to drink or somehow now able to prevent tooth decay. Also found in many water supplies are toxic pharmaceuticals which have been recycled through the kidneys of others. We must be concerned about what we are exposed to in our work and home environments. Many times things as innocuous as new carpet and furniture outgas toxic elements, let alone if one works in an industrial environment. Lastly, we must be concerned about what is recommended or prescribed to us in the way of pharmaceutical drugs and vaccines, amalgam fillings, root canals, and dental implants and be very discerning as to whom we listen to for advice regarding the real toxic load all of these exposures may possibly generate.

Keeping our cellular toxic load to a minimum is essential for good health and longevity and the elimination and avoidance of chronic disease. Toxic overload impedes cellular functioning via slowing energy production, hormone production, nutrient delivery, waste disposal, and enzyme production.

If you are currently reading this newsletter, you are more than likely being exposed to multiple toxins from one or more of the above-identified sources and as Dr. Sherry Rogers so appropriately says in her seminal book on the topic, we must Detoxify or Die.

If you are heavily toxic, the detoxification process can be daunting and certainly is not easy or short. Each and every one of us has a certain level of toxic load that should be addressed on somewhat of a continuous basis. The first step though, is to identify your particular sources of possible environmental toxins and take steps to eliminate them.

This starts with looking at where you live and work. Then look at the food and water you drink. Lastly look in your mouth and on your counter or medicine cabinet to see what kind of repair materials have been used to fix teeth and what pharmaceutical drugs you may be taking and for what ailment. Change what you can to eliminate as many of these toxic sources as possible. Then set up your detoxification protocol and try to faithfully follow it.

First and foremost, make sure the quality of your food and water is the best it can be, for at the base of everything else is an adequate source of pure water and nutrient rich whole food. Demand organic fruits, vegetables and meats at your grocery store. Filter the chlorine and ammonia from your water supply. If it is fluoridated, take iodine to offset fluoride’s goitrogenic effects. Contrary to popular belief, fluoride will not reduce your risk tooth decay, only stopping the consumption of refined sugar and flour coupled with good oral hygiene will do this.

Next, clean out your mouth of mercury and root canals and replace with non-toxic materials. Work only with mercury free dentists trained in the proper and safe removal of toxic mercury and improperly performed root canals. Be very careful whom you select to do this work. It could be the difference between an early recovery or a long, drawn out difficult one.

A good detoxification protocol would include the following:

  1. Dietary cleanup including the elimination of refined sugars and grains
  2. Mouth clean up
  3. Avoiding vaccines and pharmaceuticals
  4. Regular saunas
  5. Daily exercise
  6. Periodic deep tissue massage
  7. Annual cleanses
  8. Acupuncture
  9. Reflexology
  10. Soaking in salt water or Epsom Salts
  11. A giving mental attitude of your time and knowledge
  12. Investing in a Vitamix food blender
  13. Balancing your minerals with the Eidon Mineral Balancing Program
  14. Doing mineral detoxification protocols (Eidon is now fine tuning an excellent heavy metal detoxification protocol)
  15. Supplementing with milk thistle to support your liver and dandelion to support your kidneys in their overloaded state.

Maintaining a clean and healthy physical body is not possible via one or two magic bullets, be they nutritional supplements or pharmaceutical drugs, and while you may not be getting enough of a particular compound extracted from food, it is more the whole food that will turn you around and it is orders of magnitude less expensive. And, there is not a disease on this planet that was caused by the lack of a pharmaceutical drug.

Rather, it is a lifestyle change incorporating as many of the items listed above that is going to get you to your goal of optimal health.

In good health, Rick Wagner, M.S., C.N.

TIS THE SEASON…

...of over indulgence, and it is unrealistic to think that we will not at some point give in to the culinary delights of holiday foods. But if we keep some of the following tips in our consciousness we can limit the destructive aftermath of feeling like a participant in Epicurean orgy.

I thought this might be a good time of year to re- visit the issue of digestion. As you have undoubtedly heard before, digestion is crucial to your over all health. Different foods require different digestive conditions. Digestion of food depends on the nutrients in it and those nutrients are ultimately the fuel that keeps us healthy and vital.

The order in which you eat the foods on your plate can determine the quality of benefits you get out of your meal and will lessen the more undesirable effects of a poorly digested feast. Of course, if you are not used to this idea of compartmentalizing your food, it may seem an effort; but it can be a fun and interesting experiment and will certainly be a reinforcing one. A great way to start is to give thanks for the food in whatever way feels comfortable to you. It does not have to be an overt display and can be a simple inward acknowledgement of respect for the food, the growers and the preparer that brought this to your plate. This will set the stage for the beginning of a calm digestive process.

Protein is a word of Greek origin meaning “of first importance’. Remembering this will serve you well when sitting down to a meal. The priority in which you eat a variety of foods will have a large impact on how well your digestive system functions. Protein rich foods require acidic enzymes for their digestion and carbohydrates require alkaline enzymes. Always eat protein first. Leisurely chewing your food until it is semi liquefied insures your own enzymes are helping the process along. Pause, relax and digest before starting on the starches. Because when acidic and alkaline foods arrive together in the stomach, digestion is impaired and remains incomplete. This undigested food mass can cause various kinds of digestive disorders we have all experienced after a large or hastily eaten meal. Undigested or partially digested food ferments from sitting too long and then it becomes the medium for bacteria. Rumbling, distention, gas and bloating are signals that bacteria are partying at your expense.

There are a few simple rules to help you along in the process of proper food combining and improved digestion. You may want to start doing this now so that you can be one of the guests around the table during the holidays that feels energized and completely nourished while you wait that extra 30 minutes before dessert. Just say “no’ to GERD and heartburn, gas and bloating by eating sensibly and in proper combinations.

Some simple rules to help you digest in a healthy and comfortable way are:

  1. Do not drink water within a half hour of your meal as it dilutes the natural enzymatic actions of your body.
  2. Do not eat fruits and vegetables together…always eat fruit alone.
  3. Vegetables can be safely eaten with protein or starches.
  4. Protein always comes first and can be eaten with veggies but not with starches.
  5. Wait at least 30 minutes before eating dessert.
  6. Try to eat at least 2 to 3 hours before bedtime for a more peaceful sleep.

Do Not Take Echinacea for Swine Flu

'Swine' flu is a new virus and one of the severe complications associated with it is bacterial pneumonias that seem to reacting very differently in your body. 'Swine' flu and seasonal flu also present with the same symptoms so differentiation and diagnosis may be difficult.

"While pneumonia is a complication of flu viruses it appears to be much more virulent with 'swine' flu. This may lead to an over production of white blood cells most often referred to as 'Cytokine storm', an inflammatory reaction.

"The risk with Echinacea in this situation is that it is an immune stimulant and it increases the number of white blood cells to fight infection.

"This overabundance of white cells can lead to breaking down of the mucous membrane lining in the lungs and increase risk of death.

"One of the most helpful herbs to combat cytokine storm is nettle.Vitamin D lowers inflammatory cytokines as does vitamin C. Vitamin A (beta Carotene and fish oil based vitamin A combination) is a key nutrient for mucous membrane health; in high doses over a short time it is helpful for pneumonia."

When you are cooking the holiday meal remember that sea salt is best and beware of the sodium content on packaged food labels. Salt or sodium chloride is also known as the following:

  • sodium alginate
  • sodium ascorbate
  • sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)
  • sodium benzoate
  • sodium caseinate
  • sodium chloride
  • sodium citrate
  • sodium hydroxide
  • sodium saccharin
  • sodium stearoyl lactylate
  • sodium sulfite
  • disodium phosphate
  • monosodium glutamate (MSG)
  • trisodium phosphate
