Send Your Own Heart a Valentine!

Send Your Own Heart a Valentine!

Never underestimate the power of love.  It is a driving force in all living beings.  It may manifest differently in a human than in an animal or plant but every living thing needs it.  Love is essential for our physical, mental and spiritual well being and Valentines Day is a wonderful opportunity to make love the focus of the Day. It is not necessary to have a lover to experience the joy of giving and receiving love; be it your child, pet or the person in line at the supermarket, or even someone who cuts you off on the freeway, give it away in abundance on February 14th and see how you feel at the end of the day.

In years past I actually felt a little suspicious of the “Hallmark Holiday’ that increased the sales of cheap candy heart boxes and increased prices for flower arrangements. I have even felt a little diminished if I had no one to call my valentine. I thought of Valentines Day as contrived, but recently I have changed my perspective. I now like to think of it as a day to wake up feeling emotions of love for all the good things in my life and a day to give love away in both verbal and non verbal ways. Love given always returns…and you can’t say that for many things.

Self love is the starting point for realizing the power of this amazing healing emotion. There are many definitions for self love but basically it is the ability to receive, and to care for ourselves with kindness and respect.  This means tending to our needs and what better time to make heart health a priority on both a physical and emotional level. It is no coincidence that the big red Valentine Heart and February Heart Health month coincide. The two things are intricately connected. As I have said many times, you cannot separate emotions and physical health. There is extensive evidence to back this up, and it is a well known fact that emotions affect us on a molecular level.  The emotion of love projects an upbeat frequency not only in our own emotional and physical body but throughout the universe. Imagine a day like that.

Happy Valentines Day and Happy Healthy Heart Month, too!
