The Elusive Luxury of a Good Night's Sleep

Insomnia is nearly twice as common in women than in men, and women are more likely than men to report insomnia to their healthcare professional. A woman’s sleep is uniquely influenced by menstrual cycle, biological life stage, stress level, health, mood, parental status, work hours and other life responsibilities. Oh! What I would give for consistent and deep nightly sleep! I have read everything I can get my hands on to promote restful sleep. I have contracted my muscles from the head down and released them, I have done deep breathing, recited positive affirmations; I have exercised and I have not exercised, I have unplugged all electrical equipment so as not to bombard myself with electro magnetic frequencies. I even purchased a  magnetized pad to put under my mattress and I still wake up during the night.  At times I lie awake for hours and I only wish I was disciplined enough to go to the computer and start writing instead of replaying mind minutia.

When I saw the above statement I knew I must put it out there to all my sleepless sisters. If you have a remedy for this condition, please share it!  The best thing I have found that is non pharmaceutical is a Bach Flower remedy called White Chestnut. This little gem promotes a calm peaceful mind. If I take it when I wake up I can go back to sleep much quicker and sleep longer but I still wake up more than I care to. When I read the side effects of a pharmaceutical like lunesta or ambien it just does not seems worth the risk to me. If I ran out naked in the middle of the night I would have to move. Imagine doing weird things and having weird interactions and not remembering a thing?

A good night’s sleep shaves years off the appearance; it makes the skin taut and brings color to the cheeks and levity to the spirit. Why is it so elusive? I wonder if this problem was endemic in our culture 100 years ago. And why do we women have to have insomnia so much more frequently than men? I guess it all boils down to the fact that we are from Venus and men are from Mars.
