WHAT MAKES US HAPPY

"Research by Diener, among others, has shown that once your basic needs are met, additional income does little to raise your sense of satisfaction with life (see story on page A32). A good education? Sorry, Mom and Dad, neither education nor, for that matter, a high IQ paves the road to happiness. Youth? No, again. In fact, older people are more consistently satisfied with their lives than the young. And they're less prone to dark moods: a recent survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that people ages 20 to 24 are sad for an average of 3.4 days a month, as opposed to just 2.3 days for people ages 65 to 74. Marriage? A complicated picture: married people are generally happier than singles, but that may be because they were happier to begin with (see page A37). Sunny days? Nope, although a 1998 study showed that Midwesterners think folks living in balmy California are happier and that Californians incorrectly believe this about themselves too." Time Magazine 1/19/05

There are many new books out on the topic that reference specific keys to that elusive emotion, happiness. Some research suggests that a spiritual meaning to life is a key ingredient; others say it is a goal or a passion in life that is tantamount to happiness. One thing for sure is that genuine happiness comes from the inside out. All the old axioms we have heard such as “make lemonade out of lemons”, etc. have a simplistic ring of truth. How we perceive our world reflects what we usually get from it. If we train our mind and know that our thoughts have impact, we will see results that prove happiness is a choice Every action has a consequence, choose your actions wisely. You may have heard that a time or two, but choice is crucial when we think about it as the domino effect. Mindfulness is the word we hear about these days and it means being aware and in the moment. If we act with intention we are more empowered to create the outcome we seek. Choose to be happy. Barbara Gormlie CNHP

Thoughts from the President of Eidon, Inc.

Have you ever thought about what happiness is to you? I was waxing philosophical today about this very issue because I watched a short presentation on a group of people in South Africa who were exhibiting joy over the fact that someone had donated supplements that made them feel better. Never mind that they don’t own a house or car and probably have very few clothes, their happiness came from a gesture of love and caring from an unknown group or individual that offered them a glimmer of hope for a healthier existence. These people had very few, if any of the creature comforts we take for granted; yet their joy was palpable and elicited a smile that made me share the emotion with them.

We are a nation of abundance and have the means available to us to live a happy, full and meaningful life. But the happiness factor still seems elusive to us if we forget to take the time to be thankful for all we have; and to make the best of our life by taking measures to stay healthy. Embrace the image of yourself as an empowered person. Make the decision to stay or become healthy because if we have health and shelter and food, we have all the raw material to be happy by definition.

When we exude happiness we attract others of a like mind. What a wonderful, inexpensive gift it is to both give and receive a smile that comes from genuine emotion. I felt that today from people I will never meet but the gift of their smile brought me happiness.
